Can kids bypass parental controls?

Yes, a determined child can get around most parental controls, and it usually takes them less time than it took you to set them up. What holds is filtering that runs below the browser and above the child’s account, where a standard user simply has no switch to reach. The question is not how clever your child is. It is where the filter sits.

Why do most parental controls come off so easily?

Because they are built in the wrong place. A browser extension lives inside the browser your child uses every day. A setting in a browser profile sits in that profile. Anything running inside your child’s own account can, by design, be reached from that account. The lock is on the inside of the door.

And most of these tools cover one browser. A PC has many ways onto the internet: other browsers, game launchers, chat clients, apps with a web view built in. Lock one and the rest are still open. That is the second-browser problem, and it is why a filter can “stop working” without anyone doing anything clever at all. What actually holds?

Two properties, together.

Filtering below the browser. Every app finds a website the same way: it looks the name up first. Filter at that lookup and you are underneath every browser and app on the machine at once, so there is no “just use a different browser” move to make. Enforcement above the child’s account. Protection that runs with system-level privileges, outside your child’s standard Windows account, cannot be switched off by that account. Not because it is hidden, but because the permission genuinely isn’t there. This is the single highest-value thing you can do, and it costs nothing: put your child on a standard account.

Get both and the honest answer changes from “yes, easily” to “not from their account, no”.

Is anything still not covered?

Yes, and you should be suspicious of any company that says otherwise.

A filter on your PC protects that PC. It does not protect a friend’s console, a phone on mobile data, or a school Chromebook. It filters the content a device reaches; it does not read messages, and it cannot see a private conversation in a chat app. The real gaps are honest ones, and we have written about the biggest of them in the privacy boundary we won’t cross.

What device-level filtering does is remove the accidental and the casual, which is the overwhelming majority of what actually reaches kids, and leave you with the small number of things that need a parent rather than a product.

What do I do if my child tries to get around it?

Try not to treat it as a betrayal. Most attempts are curiosity, or a friend saying “just install this”, not a plan. Very often it isn’t the child at all: it’s an app or a “helper” tool that switches things off as part of what it does. The response that works is boring: the filter stays on, you talk about why, and you fix anything it blocked that it shouldn’t have. An arms race is the one outcome where you lose no matter who wins.
